Former Marshall running back Devon Johnson has died, according to multiple reports. He was just 25 years old.

Grant Taylor of the Herald Dispatch reported the news on Tuesday. Johnson reportedly died abruptly of an undisclosed cause at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Johnson was a star player for the Thundering Herd from 2012-2015. He was moved from linebacker to running back in 2014, where he excelled as a rusher. In 2014, he rushed for 1,767 yards and 17 touchdowns on 206 carries. It was his best year with the team.

For his career, Johnson finished with 2,373 yards and 25 touchdowns.

After his career at Marshall, Johnson spent time with the Carolina Panthers but never made their active roster. His former head coach, Doc Holliday, issued a statement.

“I am shocked and saddened at the news of Devon Johnson’s passing. Devon was a force in our program, both literally and figuratively,” Holliday told the Register-Herald. “Whether on the field or off, his impact was immeasurable and he will be missed by so many at Marshall. Our thoughts and prayer go out to his friends and family.”
