Taulia Tagovailoa is headed overseas to continue his football career.

On Thursday, the European League of Football announced that Tagovailoa had signed with the Hamburg Sea Devils. The team operates out of Hamburg, Germany, and has reached the ELF Championship game twice since the start of the 2021 season.

The ELF is comprised of 16 teams spread across Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

Hamburg went 2-10 last season under first-year head coach Matt Johnson. They did not qualify for the postseason and fired Johnson after the campaign. Shuan Fatah was hired to coach the team last September, but he resigned earlier this month with the club citing differences in “strategic direction.” Offensive coordinator Lee Rowland took over 4 days before the start of the season.

Hamburg opened the 2025 season with a 13-12 loss to the Madrid Bravos last Saturday. During the game, Hamburg quarterback Micah Leon suffered an injury and has since been placed on IR.

Tagovailoa is expected to start for Hamburg in place of Leon.

The former Maryland quarterback broke the all-time passing record for a Big Ten quarterback during his time with the Terps. He also set single-season school records for yards and completion percentage and tied a school record for passing touchdowns. He went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft and pivoted to the CFL, where he appeared in 8 games with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Hamburg’s next game is Saturday in Prague.
