Former Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke is one of nine players cut by the New England Patriots this week. The organization announced the news on Sunday.
Lewerke went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft but was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent. But after just three months with the organization, New England decided to cut the former three-year starter for the Spartans.
In addition to Lewerke, New England also released Malik Gant (DB), Will Hastings (WR), Adarius Pickett (DB), Sean Riley (WR), J’Mar Smith (QB), Kyahva Tezino (LB), Courtney Wallace (DL) and Isaiah Zuber (WR).
Lewerke spent five years at Michigan State and was the team’s starting quarterback from 2017-19. He totaled 8,293 yards through the air and 47 touchdown passes while completing better than 57 percent of his passes. Lewerke also rushed for 1,255 yards and an additional 10 scores, and also had a touchdown catch.
Michigan State finished the 2019 campaign with a 7-6 record, which included a victory over Wake Forest in the Pinstripe Bowl.
