Former Ohio State and New York Jets offensive lineman Nick Mangold, who a few weeks earlier announced that he needed a kidney transplant as he battled a serious kidney disease, has died. Mangold turned 41 on Saturday.

“Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family,” Jets owner and chairman Woody Johnson said in a statement.

Mangold, a native of Centerville, Ohio, was a first-team All-American as a senior at Ohio State in 2005. He was later drafted by the Jets with the 29th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.

He became one of the top offensive linemen in the NFL, being named to 7 Pro Bowls during his career. He made the All-Pro first team twice in back-to-back seasons (2009 and 2010) and was a second-team All-Pro pick in 2011.

Following the 2016 season, he was released by the Jets. He eventually retired in April 2018 and was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022.
