Former Penn State quarterback Christian Veilleux is Pitt’s new starter, according to a report. He replaces veteran Phil Jurkovec, who is off to a slow start in 2023.

That’s per the Post-Gazette’s Noah Hiles, who says that Veilleux’s teammates learned of the news on Wednesday morning.

The report also says Jurkovec has been demoted all the way to 3rd string. Nate Yarnell is expected to serve as Veilleux’s backup in the coming weeks.

Veilleux began his career at Penn State but transferred to Pitt this offseason. He spent 2 seasons with the Nittany Lions. So far in 2023, he has completed 12-of-27 passes for 145 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions

Pitt’s reported decision to bench Jurkovec comes as the team will be on bye in Week 6. Jurkovec has been one of the least-efficient passers at the FBS level so far this season. His passer efficiency rating of 124.56 ranks 94th nationally and 12th in the ACC.

He has completed 50.9% of his passes so far this season for 818 yards, 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions..

Pitt will face No. 25 Louisville next week as it comes out of its bye week. The Panthers currently sit at 1-4 and will need a hot streak in order to reach bowl eligibility this season.
