Ryan Russell played at Purdue from 2011-14. Russell mostly played on the defensive line, but had a stint as a linebacker as well.
Following his time as a Boilermaker, Russell, a 6-foot-5 prospect, got selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Over the next three years, Russell played for two different teams and left the league in 2018.
What was next for Russell? Arguably the hardest thing he would have to face in his life. In a first-person article that can be read on ESPN, Russell came out about exactly who he is:
Russell is not just a talented football player. He’s not just a “damn good writer, a loving son, an overbearing brother, a caring friend” or “a loyal lover.”
He is also bisexual.
To some, this may come as a shock and will make others look at Russell a certain way. But you know what?
He doesn’t care. He wants everyone to know exactly who he is. And that displays the courage he has as a human being.
Regardless of whether he makes it back into the NFL and lands with a team or not — Russell has done one thing: Be true to himself and everyone around him.
For that, he should be commended.
There is much more to Russell and the story he shared. The entire article on ESPN can be read here.
