Fran McCaffery knows that from time to time players are going to go on shooting slumps. One of the more recent players to have shooting issues is Payton Sandfort.
Sandfort is hitting 34.2% of his shots from the floor this season and is 10% from three-point range in his last eight games. As a freshman last season, Sandfort made 37% of his three-point attempts.
McCaffery revealed his message to Sandfort during this tough shooting stretch. Sandfort is putting too much pressure on himself to make shots, according to McCaffery.
“We’re gonna keep playing him, we’re going to keep going to him. I told him ‘I love you. You’re a terrific player, you affect the game in so many different ways. You’re putting too much pressure on yourself to make jump shots, just go out there and make plays. Be a really good basketball player. That’s what you are, and the shots will come.'”

It sounds like McCaffery has a lot of faith in Sandfort’s abilities. McCaffery believes that Sandfort is a great basketball player and that’s all the Iowa G needs to be.
Sandfort and Iowa both have a chance to get back on track against Southeast Missouri State on Saturday. Tipoff will be at 8:30 p.m. ET on BTN.
