Frank Solich tribute: Nebraska unveils special field paint for spring game in honor of Solich’s return

Frank Solich is back in Lincoln this week for Nebraska’s annual spring game. The former player and head coach of the Huskers will be honored by the program on Saturday, Nebraska AD Trev Alberts announced in March.

Friday evening, Nebraska unveiled one portion of the tribute to Solich. On the field inside Memorial Stadium, the 45-yard lines have all been painted and outlined in red.

Solich played fullback for the Huskers and wore No. 45 in the 1960s before eventually returning to the coaching staff:

Solich eventually replaced legendary head coach Tom Osborne and produced a 58-19 overall record leading the Huskers from 1998-2003. Nevertheless, he was fired after a 9-3 season his final year at Nebraska before producing a 16-year run at Ohio in the MAC.

“It makes a lot of sense to be back. I spent a lot of time on that field out there… so it’s great to be back,” said Solich about his return. He also said he simply “felt comfortable” being back right now.

“I just felt welcome in that manner and knew it would be good to get back and be a part of what Nebraska is all about. I look forward to it, and I’m glad I’m here,” Solich explained.
