Fred Hoiberg discusses commitment of Bryce McGowens as ‘centerpiece’ for Nebraska’s program

Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg is giddy over signing five-star high school prospect Bryce McGowens to play basketball for the Cornhuskers. McGowens, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard out of Legacy Charter in Greenville, South Carolina, is the highest-rated recruit in the history of the program. He is rated the No. 25 prospect in the country for the class of 2021.
McGowen’s older brother, Trey, transferred last season into Lincoln to play for Nebraska. Bryce said the chance to play in college with his older brother was too important to pass up.
Hoiberg was happy to hear it.
“I believe that signing Bryce changes the whole trajectory of our program,” Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said Friday. “He is the centerpiece of what I believe is the strongest class that Nebraska basketball has ever signed. Since I’ve been here, we have talked about building a program that can have sustained success, and adding a player of Bryce’s caliber shows that we building something special here. It shows that Nebraska can compete for some of the top players in the country. It also says a lot about the type of person that Bryce is. He wanted to go to a place where he can create a legacy and help Nebraska basketball reach new heights.”
Hoiberg’s team finished with a 7-25 record in his first year in Lincoln, but the new head coach has a history of building uptempo offenses requiring skillsets that transfer well to professional basketball. Coach Hoiberg’s second season in Lincoln will begin later this year, while McGowens will arrive in time for year three.
