Illinois defensive backs and safeties coach Donnie Abraham will actually have the opportunity to watch his son play when the Illini travel to Tampa on Friday. And he’ll have a pretty good view, too.
That’s because Donnie’s son, Devin Abraham, is suiting up for South Florida, Illinois’ opponent this week.
Donnie is in his first season with the Illini, joining Lovie Smith’s staff in the offseason. Devin will be making his 28th career start for the Bulls. The safety has already recorded seven tackles and intercepted two passes in the first two weeks of the season.
According to an article published in the Tampa Bay Times, this isn’t the first time the father and son have collided on the football field.
In 2013, Donnie was the head coach at Clearwater High School and Devin was at East Lake High School. The son got the best of his father that night. He’ll be looking to make it 2-0 on Friday.
Donnie is a former NFL cornerback and played for Tampa Bay when Smith was the defensive coordinator.
This isn’t exactly a new experience for Donnie and Devin but it’s certainly a unique headline for the two programs heading into Week 3.
Illinois-USF is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN.
