When Greg Mattison agreed to become the defensive coordinator at Ohio State, he was taking on a bit of a challenge. It had more to do with scheme than talent.
Mattison inherited a defense that ranked 10th in the B1G in yardage allowed and seventh in points allowed per game. Several times throughout the 2018 season, the Buckeyes’ defense was picked apart — particularly in games against Purdue, Nebraska and Maryland. Something as fundamental as tackling was an issue at times last fall.
To counter Ohio State’s shortcomings last season, Mattison is simplifying the defense heading into 2019. With the kind of athletes in Columbus, the new defensive coordinator just wants his kids to play.
“Our thing will be to keep it simpler and let them play,” Mattison said while meeting with the media on Friday. “You’ve got a secondary that is fast, strong, experienced…linebackers look like defensive linemen and run like they’re supposed to run.”
Mattison also said the defensive line is “as good as there is.”
Along with simplifying the playbook, Mattison plans to rotate players in the game more frequently this fall. With the talent level in Columbus, he’s confident that rotation players can still make a huge impact on the game while giving the starters some breaks. Mattison believes keeping players fresh in a game — and throughout the season is key.
Ohio State was forced to focus on fundamentals at different times throughout the season in 2018. With a more complicated scheme, players seemed to get away from the basics. But Mattison is hoping that an easier approach and allowing guys to utilize their talent will result in a better defensive performance this fall.
Mattison seems to be impressed with the talent level so far and is pleased with how well every position group has performed throughout the spring.
That should be a promising sign as spring wraps up and the Buckeyes prepare for summer and fall.
