Greg McElroy explained why he ranked Michigan as the No. 1 team in the country after Week 7 on the Always College Football show.

Michigan pulled off a 41-17 win over Penn State in a top-10 matchup in Ann Arbor. That win secured Michigan’s status as a top-5 team and a College Football Playoff contender.

In McElroy’s eyes, Michigan earned the right to be looked at as the best team in the country. He explained why Michigan proved that they were the best team in college football:

“Michigan is No. 1, Tennessee is No. 2. ‘Last week you were telling us Michigan hadn’t played anybody.’ Yes, that’s right… but after last week, things have changed drastically,” McElroy said.

The win over Penn State put Michigan ahead of everyone else in college football for McElroy. McElroy did not see Penn State as a Playoff contender, but he viewed the Nittany Lions as a good team:

“Michigan had one of the most convincing victories of the year against I team that I think is okay,” McElroy said. “I don’t think Penn State’s a Playoff team, but Penn State has 2 good wins… the dominance that was on display from Michigan to start to finish.”

Michigan went to 7-0 with last week’s win over Penn State. To reach the Playoff, Michigan will likely need to end the regular season without a loss.

The Wolverines will be off this week and will return against Michigan State on Oct. 29.
