Greg McElroy broke down all of the exciting action in store across the country in Week 1 on his “Always College Football” podcast. That included a preview of Ohio State vs. Notre Dame, the marquee matchup to open the season.

McElroy made it clear that he does like the Buckeyes to win and to win comfortably against the Irish while playing at home in Columbus. However, McElroy pointed out that “comfortably” does not include Ohio State winning by 17+ points with the spread at 17.5 ahead of kickoff.

“I think Ohio State wins the game comfortably. When I say that, comfortably to me is two touchdowns,” said McElroy. “I think 17 (points) is way too many. I think Notre Dame’s going to have a plan, I think Notre Dame will have a difficult time stopping Ohio State, but I also think Ohio State is going to have a difficult time stopping Notre Dame.

“Wouldn’t be surprised if this is a high-scoring affair, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Notre Dame keeps it close for the better part of three and a half quarters. I definitely wouldn’t lay 17.5 points.”

A lot is on the line for Ohio State this season, and it all starts with Notre Dame in Week 1. While the Buckeyes want to look impressive out of the gate, a win is a win in a top-5 matchup.

We’ll see how things shake out in Week 1.
