Greg McElroy is well-schooled in huge showdowns from his days as the quarterback at Alabama, and he played in many of them while leading the Crimson Tide to the 2009 national championship.

In 2025, Penn State‘s trip to Columbus to play Ohio State was supposed to be 1 of those titanic matchups that everyone looks forward to. As the Week 10 matchup finally approaches, the Buckeyes certainly did their part, winning their first 7 games and holding on to that No. 1 ranking. The defending national champions have looked the part in 2025 and have a great chance to repeat.

As for Penn State, well, that’s another story altogether. The Nittany Lions won their first 3 games, then fell off the wagon, losing 4 in a row and firing head coach James Franklin. Penn State will still have a chance to knock off the hated Buckeyes in their house in the Big Ten battle, but it sure does look a lot tougher now than it even did back in late August.

What about McElroy? The ESPN college football analyst weighed in on Saturday’s noon ET matchup on FOX during his Always College Football podcast on Wednesday.

“The pick here is Ohio State,” McElroy said. “I wouldn’t bet this game, because this is the Super Bowl for Penn State. But if you told me right now I had to play it, I’m laying the points. I’m not picking against Ohio State, especially going up against a team that hasn’t showed me a whole lot over the past few weeks.”
