Harlon Barnett is keeping his quarterback plans close to the vest.
The Michigan State interim head coach was asked during his Monday press conference about his QB1 for the upcoming game against Rutgers. Starting quarterback Noah Kim has struggled during a 3-game losing skid, prompting speculation about a change. Kim beat out Katin Houser and Sam Leavitt in fall camp.
Barnett described the QB situation as an ongoing competition.
“We’re still evaluating it. It’s a good competition going on,” Barnett told reporters.
“It’s going to be good. Guys know where they stand, what’s going to happen and so we’ll just leave it at that for now.”
He reiterated that any QB change won’t be made public before Saturday’s B1G clash.
“Because we don’t want anyone to know, kind of, Barnett said. “We know what we’re going to do and we feel good about it so you’ll see on Saturday.”
After starting 2-0, MSU has dropped its last 3 games to Washington, Maryland and Iowa. In the last 3 games, Kim has thrown just 1 touchdown while being picked off 6 times.
Kim is MSU’s only QB to have appeared in all 5 games. Houser has appeared in 4 games, posting a season statline of 9-of-16 for 158 yards and 1 interception. In the Maryland game, House was 6-of-10 passing for 75 yards with his lone pick. Leavitt made his only appearance of the season against Maryland, logging 2 passing attempts and 2 rushes.
Michigan State at Rutgers is set for a noon ET kickoff, airing on the Big Ten Network.
