Michigan has to be at rock-bottom now, Saturday’s loss to previously winless Penn State a devastatingly bad outing from a team that entered the season ranked in the polls and with legitimate Big Ten title ambitions.
And here and now is Michigan, 2-4 after their Penn State (1-5) loss, hoping to close out the season strong and get into a bowl game. Times are tough right now for Michigan and head coach Jim Harbaugh as the program is clearly struggling and seemingly without answers.
And it hasn’t gotten any easier, with the program pausing all team activities in accordance with COVID-19 protocols. This could affect their weekend game as well as their regular season finale against Ohio State.
Here is what Harbaugh had to say on Monday ahead of their game on Saturday against Maryland:
Jim Harbaugh, I think, for the first time all season, pushed back against critics, saying that those outside the program are more results-oriented instead of appreciating the process. Harbaugh called it "disdain for the process."

Jim Harbaugh was asked about if a player tested presumptive positive before Saturday's game, to which he said "yes."

Harbaugh: I believe it has been worth it [to play this year]. There's challenges in football and in life. Responding and rising up to those challenges is something I believe in very strongly.

Jim Harbaugh just said, "People outside of the program are very results oriented."

Harbaugh: We're a team that's competing and working at it. There's disdain for the process by some, but to us, that's the whole ballgame. The process to us is very important.

— Theo Mackie (@theo_mackie) November 30, 2020
Harbaugh: Gemon Green had a very good game and was particularly good in man-to-man coverage. Those three (along with Vince Gray and Dax Hill) were especially good. It's something we're getting good at.

Harbaugh asked about positive tests and what the number was: "It was an increased number from zero."

Harbaugh: Kwity is a difference maker. It was good to see him back in practice and playing in games. He's as good as they come; a real football player.

Harbaugh denies the detail in my story that he had to turn to players and tell them to cheer. To re-state: The coaches were running down the sideline cheering. Most of the players were already standing. Harbaugh turned to a group sitting on the bench and waved them to stand up.

"Very proactive culture, it is literally day-to-day, the protocols are in place" – Harbaugh on the the decision to have the team shift to virtual

I thought this was an interesting exchange w Harbaugh. I had asked if he can detect what’s missing with the team — confidence? Energy? His comment about “disdain for the process” by people outside the program intrigued me ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ pic.twitter.com/gyFViv6YNE
