It has not been an easy 2021 season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and fourth-year head coach Scott Frost. The Cornhuskers wanted to get their third win of the season and a big win over a former conference foe in the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners.
Even though Oklahoma gave Nebraska every chance to take the lead, Nebraska couldn’t find a chance or the rhythm to upset Oklahoma. The Sooners took a 7-3 lead in the first quarter as Heisman Trophy contending quarterback Spencer Rattler was making mistakes left and right.
Nebraska had a chance to cut the lead to one point, but Conner Culp failed to convert a 50-yard field goal in the middle of the second quarter. Oklahoma continued to add to their lead in the third quarter as they barely outscored Nebraska 9-6.
After an Oklahoma touchdown that gave them a 23-9 lead, Nebraska needed a score to get back into the game but an interception from quarterback Adrian Martinez turned into a disaster. In their next drive, Nebraska was able to account for a three-play, 38-yard drive that resulted in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to Omar Manning to cut the lead to 23-16.
The Cornhuskers were unable to get a drive going as they got their last possession back with 40 seconds left in the game. Oklahoma outgained Nebraska in total yards accounted for 408-to-384, but it was the interception from Martinez that was too much for them to overcome.
Here’s what Frost had to say after his team’s performance:

Frost says Nebraska gameplanned to limit possessions for both teams in the first half. It succeeded at that. He also said he thought the Sooners committed an illegal block on their lone touchdown of the first half.

Frost is talking about the block against Cam Taylor-Britt by Drake Stoops on a completion midway through that drive. https://t.co/jOL4tgsT5O

Frost said he was proud of his players and “I’m disappointed for them because we had a chance and that would have been pretty special.”
He told the team after that everything they want this season is still out there for them and there will be plenty of chances for big wins.

Frost obviously frustrated with the mistakes and with the kicking game, but also said, “I think we showed today that we’re close.” #Huskers
