Purdue took another step toward redemption with a big win over Gonzaga on Friday night in the Sweet 16.
The Boilermakers haven’t had much trouble advancing in March Madness and their most recent game wasn’t too different. When the smoke cleared, Purdue beat Gonzaga 80-68. Matt Painter and company will await the winner of Creighton-Tennessee in the next round.
Even an elite program like Gonzaga couldn’t stop the offensive attack of Zach Edey, Braden Smith and others. Nearly all of Purdue’s starters finished the game with double-digits in scoring. Edey recorded yet another double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds.
With how dominant the Boilermakers have been in March, many fans and media have started looking ahead to a potential matchup with UConn. The Boilermakers and Huskies would eventually play each other in the national championship if things go well for both teams.

It’s been a much different NCAA Tournament for Purdue fans compared to last season. The Boilermakers are a win away from reaching the Final Four when they were upset in the first round by Farleigh-Dickinson a year prior.
Some fans discussed how disappointing it would be for Purdue if it doesn’t ended up winning the whole tournament. With how deep the team has made it in March, the road is only going to get tougher for the Boilermakers.
Here are some of the reactions to Purdue’s win over Gonzaga to move on to the Elite Eight:
I think the only way Purdue can lose is if Edey gets in foul trouble..but nobody is willing to go at him enough to draw contact. Boilers look like they’ll win it all

Have to give Purdue credit. I thought the Zags were going to be a tough game for them but this has been impressive.

Really tough to beat this Purdue team. If this is it, I’m proud of how the season turned out. Kept the streak, a lot of great games and memories

And Purdue is just smacking Gonzaga now @PurdueSports @ZagMBB

If Purdue doesn’t win the whole thing (due to the fact that they are playing 8v5 every game) they should be very very upset with themselves

Purdue 76-59, 324. Awe-inspiring offense from the Boilermakers. Second-half conversion rate of 60% and 23 assists on 30 field goals. No team can keep up with that, even with Gonzaga still shooting 45.5% overall.

Nothing is for certain in college basketball, but with Purdue leading 76-59 with 3 to go, it’s looking like this one’s over. Gonzaga never made adjustments to the inside scoring that Purdue was thriving on.
