Hudson Card, former Texas QB, ‘in the mix’ for 2 B1G West programs

Former Texas quarterback Hudson Card might now be the most sought-after quarterback in the transfer portal. Where will he land? According to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer, 2 B1G West programs might have the upper hand.

Hummer said that Purdue is “in the mix” for Card following the hiring of former Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters. The Boilermakers will need a new quarterback following the departure of 6th-year senior Aidan O’Connell.

The other program? Walters’ former school Illinois, which could need a starter should Tommy DeVito fail to receive an NCAA waiver for a 7th year in college.

“I think Purdue is in the mix,” Hummer said. “I certainly think Illinois is in the mix, Oregon State is in the mix, Notre Dame is in the mix there. Maybe down the line, TCU could get in the mix since Max Duggan is gone potentially. I don’t think Hudson Card is short on options, but I don’t think he’s in a particular hurry.”

Illinois was listed as 1 of the favorites to land former N.C. State quarterback Devin Leary due to his brother, Donovan, being on the roster. Leary ended up committing to Kentucky earlier this week following the re-hiring of former offensive coordinator Liam Coen from the Los Angeles Rams.

Purdue, which won the B1G West, could be looking for veteran experience in Year 1 of the Walters era in hopes of remaining the top program in the division for 2023. The Boilermakers did pick up the commitment of 3-star quarterback Ryan Browne from New Berlin (N.Y.) but could view Card as a short-term option.

Card spent 3 seasons with the Longhorns, playing in 15 games during that span. Over his final 2 years, he threw for 1,523 yards and 11 touchdowns. He threw just 2 interceptions in 194 attempts.
