‘If we don’t win this game, it doesn’t matter’: Ohio State not focused on College Football Playoff rankings

It was just a week ago that the College Football Playoff Selection Committee gave everyone their first top 25 for the 2021 season. Of course, disagreement abounded. But while everyone has an opinion, it’s only theirs that will matter in the end.
Thanks to some upsets among the top teams, there is sure to be some shakeup in the rankings when they come out Tuesday night, but for Ohio State coach Ryan Day, it doesn’t really matter. The Buckeyes coach is focused on this weekend’s game with Purdue.

With their 40-29 dismantling of No. 8 Michigan State last weekend, the Boilermakers moved to 6-3 on the season. Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell had his best game of the season against the Spartans, throwing 536 yards and 3 touchdowns. During the Boilermakers last two games, both wins, O’Connell has 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.
Purdue enjoys the role of being a ranked team’s thorn in the side, with 17 wins over top-5 ranked teams in their history – the Buckeyes currently sit at No. 6.
Those are just numbers, though.
For Day and the Buckeyes, where they fall in the CFP rankings won’t mean anything if they don’t beat the Boilermakers.
Just ask Michigan State and Wake Forest.
