Illinois basketball player ‘went down’ in practice, is undergoing further testing

Illinois basketball player Jayden Epps “went down” during the Illini’s practice on Tuesday and had to spend the night in the hospital, head coach Brad Underwood said Wednesday.

Underwood said Epps underwent “series of tests and evaluations” as doctors are trying to diagnose what went wrong. Underwood did not give many additional details, but he did say Epps is “progressing.”

Terrence Shannon Jr. told reporters that Epps has been released from the hospital.

Epps is a freshman at Illinois this season and has quickly become a key player for the Illini. He’s averaging 10 points per game while mostly coming off the bench.

Epps is originally from Norfolk, Virginia. He was a 4-star prospect in the class of 2022.

Illinois has not yet announced a timeline for Epps’ return to action. The Illini are entering the home stretch of the regular season and have just 2 games remaining before the Big Ten Tournament.

Forward Matthew Mayer told reporters that the incident is “affecting everybody.”

“We’re just waiting to see what happens,” Mayer said. “He’s obviously OK … We just don’t know what’s gonna happen to him the rest of the season.

“We have no idea what’s going on.”

Illinois will face Michigan at home on Thursday.
