Illinois defensive end Bobby Roundtree won’t play at all this season, but his teammates aren’t forgetting about him.
Actually, he is a source of inspiration. Fellow Fighting Illini defensive end Ayo Shogbonyo essentially admitted that when he dedicated the 2019 season to his friend following his fantastic performance against Akron on Saturday.
“I can’t even express how much I love that dude,” Shogbonyo said according to 247Sports. “This season is for him.”
In the 42-3 victory against the Zips in Week 1, Shogbonyo posted 5.0 total tackles, including 2.0 solos, 2.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. In total, Illinois recorded six sacks and 12 tackles for loss despite missing Roundtree in the season opener.
Roundtree suffered a “serious injury” in a swimming incident in Tampa during the summer. His status for the rest of the season is unknown.
