Illinois is getting some help at the guard position through the transfer market.
On Friday afternoon, former Texas Tech gaurd Terrence Shannon Jr. announced his commitment to Illinois, filling a void on Brad Underwood’s roster entering the 2022-23 season. He made his announcement with a post on Twitter.
Shannon averaged 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2 assists per game for the Red Raiders during the 2021-22 campaign. He helped lead Texas Tech to a Sweet 16 berth.
Shannon is a quality shooter in every guard, connecting on better than 38% of his 3-point attempts and successfully converting on 78.4% of his shots from the free throw line. Overall, the 6-foot-6 guard was a 45.5% shooter from the floor.

Last season’s point production took a bit of a hit but Shannon developed into a better passer for the Red Raiders. In 2020-21, Shannon averaged 12.9 points per game but only 1.4 assists per contest.
Over his three years in Lubbock, Shannon played in 83 games and made 53 starts. For his career, he’s averaging 11 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. The Chicago native will have two years of eligibility to use in Champaign for the upcoming season.
Illinois closed out last season with a B1G regular season title and earning a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
