Illinois is looking to round out the 2024 recruiting class, but one prospect is back on the market.

The player is Karsen Konkel, a 3-star tight end and in-state recruit for the Illini out of Pinckneyville Community High School. He had been committed to Bret Bielema’s program since the summer but confirmed his plans to reopen his recruitment on Tuesday.

“After much thought and discussions with my family, I have decided to reopen my recruitment,” Konkel confirmed on social media.

Konkel is listed at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds as a 3-star TE for the cycle. The 247 Sports Composite also rates Konkel as the 43rd TE in the country and the No. 20 player out of Illinois for the cycle.

Losing a player like Konkel, particularly close to the Early Signing Period, is never good. However, Illinois does have another TE currently committed for 2024 in 3-star Tanner Hollinger out of Nebraska.
