Illinois Sophomore defensive back Dylan Thomas has announced he will be medically retiring from football, and will begin a role as a student assistant in Champaign.
The Monticello, Illinois native was a redshirt freshman, and then missed his next two seasons due to injuries. He was moved to defensive back during spring practices. Thomas was a four-year letterwinner in football and three-year letterwinner in track at Monticello, leading the team to conference titles in both his junior and senior seasons.
Thomas made the announcement over his Twitter feed on Thursday.

Thomas was a walk-on player for the Fighting Illini.
News of his medical retirement comes less than 10 days before Illinois is scheduled to take the field in Champaign. The Fighting Illini host Nebraska in Week 0 to open the college football season.
