The Illinois secondary will be without one of its returning starters for the season opener.
Redshirt senior Jaylen Dunlap won’t play against Ball State, according to Bob Asmussen of the News Gazette. Lovie Smith made the announcement on Friday.

Dunlap has missed most of fall camp with a leg injury and wasn’t able to get healthy in time for Week 1. He started all 12 games for the Illini last year, totaling 63 tackles and 11 pass break-ups for the year. The senior cornerback has played in 37 career games.
Illinois kicks off the season against Ball State in Champaign at 12 p.m. ET.
