Indiana basketball player arrested in Bloomington early Sunday morning

Mackenzie Mgbako, a 5-star recruit listed at 6-foot-8 and expected to make an impact for the Hoosiers this season, was arrested early Sunday morning.
According to an officer at the Monroe County jail, as well as jail records, Mgbako, 18, was booked in at 3:16 a.m. Sunday on a pair of charges: criminal trespass, and resisting law enforcement. Each is a Class A misdemeanor, the IndyStar reported. Per the jail officer, Mgbako posted bond at 5:25 a.m. and has since been released.
An Indiana spokesman responded to the news: “IU Athletics is aware of the situation,” an athletic department spokesman said. “We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal process, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants.”
Mgbako, a former Duke commit, chose to sign with Indiana over Kansas. He turned heads because Mgbako was the nation’s No. 8 recruit in 247Sports’ composite rankings, and he became the first top-10 recruit to sign with a Big Ten school since 2018.
When Mgbako was introduced by coach Mike Woodson, the coach said he had a chance to make an immediate impact.
“He’s a tremendous offensive player who gives us athleticism, length and the ability to be an inside/out threat. He can beat people off the dribble, rebound, run the floor and guard multiple positions,” Woodson said.
