Indiana football beat Miami again on Friday.

The Hoosiers landed a commitment from 4-star linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield on Friday, earning his commitment over the likes of Miami, Georgia and other big-name offers such as Alabama, Texas, Ohio State and Oregon, to name a few.

Mayfield is a good example of a prospect whose star rating means absolutely nothing to the programs chasing him. Several outlets list Mayfield as a 3-star prospect, but 247Sports composite rankings consider him to be the No. 216 overall prospect in the country and the No. 16 overall linebacker. And judging by his offer list, a bunch of teams rate him a whole lot higher than that.

Mayfield is the 13th addition of the 2027 cycle for head coach Curt Cignetti. He’s also the second commitment from a linebacker in the 2027 class, joining Kentucky-based LB Garyon Hobbs.

Hailing from Lincolnton, North Carolina, Mayfield is multi-sport athlete who also saw action in Lincolnton high school’s backfield. He thrives as an off-ball linebacker according to 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks, who also insists Mayfield is a P4 contributor.

In addition to playing football, Mayfield also stars in track and field.
