Indiana promotes from within to find new defensive coordinator

Indiana football had its ups and downs this season, and in the end, the Hoosiers aren’t going bowling.
At 5-7 overall, the team didn’t get an invitation for a bowl game, so its season has come to a close. With that, changes were going to be made. Indiana, of course, hopes that changes will lead to more wins.
One change that has officially been made already is the team’s change at defensive coordinator. On Thursday morning, Indiana announced that LBs coach Kane Wommack is being promoted to defensive coordinator.
“Without question, Kane Wommack is ready for this opportunity,” Allen said. “I have tremendous confidence in him and his understanding of our entire defense, from the front to the back. I will still be heavily involved, but Kane will take over the play-calling responsibilities, the organization of our defensive staff and all that we do on that side of the ball.”
Wommack was initially hired by Indiana on Jan. 8 2018, so his rise to defensive coordinator has come quickly. Prior to being with the Hoosiers, Wommack served as a defensive coordinator at South Alabama in 2016 and 2017.
Wommack has also worked with head coach Tom Allen in the past as well, back in 2012-13, he was a graduate assistant at Ole Miss when Allen was the team’s LBs coach.
