Iowa AD will take leave of absence after being diagnosed with prostate cancer

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta is taking a leave of absence after being diagnose with prostate cancer, according to reports.

On Tuesday morning, Mark Emmert of Hawk Central reported that Barta will take an extended medical leave to undergo treatment and surgery.

Deputy Director of Athletics Barbara Burke will take over in Barta’s absence. He is expected to return to work once treatment and surgery have been completed according to Emmert.

Barta has been at Iowa since August 2006 and has been involved with multiple facility upgrades, stadium renovations and coaching changes during his tenure.
