Iowa is looking for a big season in 2022. The Hawkeyes begin that mission with a Saturday matchup against FCS South Dakota State.

Iowa recently announced its captains for the game.

One of the Hawkeyes’ captains is Riley Moss. The senior cornerback is a preseason first-team All-B1G selection by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.

Moss has recorded 111 tackles and 10 interceptions (3 returned for touchdowns) over his Iowa career.

The other captains are Kaevon Merriweather, Sam LaPorta, and Jack Campbell.

Campbell, a senior linebacker, recorded 143 tackles last season. That mark was the best in Iowa history since Pat Angerer had 145 stops in 2009. Along with Moss, Iowa should have a stout defense as it looks to win the B1G West division.

Merriweather, a defensive back, made 30 stops and an interception in 2021. LaPorta is one of the best returning players at tight end. The 6-foot-4 LaPorta had 53 receptions for 670 yards and 3 touchdowns last season. He led all B1G tight ends in receptions and yards as well as catches of 15+ yards with 18.
