The No. 40 jersey worn by late Iowa Hawkeye basketball great Chris Street will be worn on the back of another player.
Nicholas Baer is playing with Iowa United in “The Basketball Tournament,” which is broadcast across ESPN networks and has a $2 million grand prize. The event began on July 19, but on Wednesday, the club announced that it will honor Street this year.
Baer will wear the No. 40 jersey during the event, and Iowa United will travel with Street’s jersey to Wichita for the opening round game. According to the tweet, Iowa United received permission from Street’s family.

For his toughness and do-it-tall mentality, Baer has often been compared to Street as a basketball player. It’s fitting that he’ll be the one honoring the former Hawkeye.
Street was killed in an automobile accident outside Iowa City on Jan. 1993. A few weeks after his death, the University of Iowa retired his No. 40 jersey.
