Saturday Tradition News: What Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz said at weekly press conference
Despite an ugly first half, a huge second half propelled Iowa to a big 33-7 win over Northern Illinois to start the year 1-0.
It was a rocky start for the Hawkeyes, who scored just three points in the first two quarters, taking a 3-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Iowa shook off the rust after the break, however, and outscored the Huskies 30-7 in the final 30 minutes, cruising to a Week 1 win.
Now the Hawkeyes are preparing for a rivalry matchup against Iowa State this weekend. Ferentz talked Iowa State and more at his weekly press conference.
Hayden Fry was fantastic at Iowa.
Fry, who coached the Hawkeyes from 1979-1998, ended his career with a 143-89-6 overall record. The 143 wins marked a program record up until Saturday afternoon.
Kirk Ferentz, who has been the man in charge at Iowa since 1999, was 143-97 going into the 2018 season opener against Northern Illinois. Ferentz and the Hawkeyes never showed much doubt as to who the better team was, going on to win 33-7.
With the victory, Ferentz got his 144th win, which marks the new record for most wins as a head coach at Iowa.
