Kirk Ferentz has named his starting quarterback for Iowa’s Week 1 game against Wyoming.

Sophomore Nathan Stanley will take the first snap for the Hawkeyes on Saturday, according to reports. Stanley was in a quarterback battle with Tyler Wiegers throughout spring practice and fall camp.

Iowa’s play-by-play radio announcer, Gary Dolphin, broke the news on Twitter:

After spring, Stanley was the favorite to win the job but Ferentz claimed the race was neck-and-neck. There was no mention of whether or not Wiegers would be rotated into the lineup at the time of the report.

Stanley appeared in seven games as a freshman in 2016, completing 5-of-9 passes for 64 yards. His biggest contribution came in Iowa’s loss to North Dakota State, completing two passes for 45 yards that resulted in a scoring drive.

Iowa opens the year against Wyoming at 12:00 p.m. EST.
