One Iowa QB is planning to test the transfer portal with the 2023 regular season wrapped up.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, that player is Joey Labas, a redshirt sophomore this season. Labas joined the program as a 3-star recruit out of Ohio in the 2021 recruiting class, but he did not see much playing time with the Hawkeyes.

During the 2021-22 seasons, Spencer Petras started the majority of the games for the Hawkeyes with Alex Padilla as the primary backup. Following last season’s regular season, Petras was injured and Padilla entered the transfer portal, leading Labas to start in the bowl game against Kentucky.

Labas led Iowa to a 21-0 Music City Bowl win over the Wildcats and went 14-for-24 throwing the football with 139 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, that was Labas’ only chance to pass the ball during his career.

Entering 2023, Cade McNamara was in line to be Iowa’s starter, and Labas dealt with a training camp injury that hindered his progression. As a result, Deacon Hill bypassed Labas on the depth chart and served as the starting QB following the season-ending injury to McNamara.
