Iowa released an early depth chart for the team with one month remaining in the offseason.

This was a preseason depth chart for the Hawkeyes and there were some key additions and subtractions to the roster in 2022. The quarterback room will be one position group to keep an eye on throughout the preseason and regular season.

Spencer Petras was named QB1 for Iowa. In 2021, Petras passed for 10 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, and 1,880 yards. He struggled to stand out as Iowa’s guaranteed starting quarterback in 2022, but he made enough progress in the preseason to be the starter with one month left in training camp. Junior quarterback Alex Padilla could compete for the starting job before the start of the season or at some point during the season.

The running backs will have the responsibility of picking up where Tyler Goodson left off. Goodson left Iowa for the NFL after he rushed for 1,151 yards in 2021. Gavin Williams will assume the role of being the lead running back in fall camp.

The defense had several returners appear at the top of the preseason depth chart. Middle linebacker Jack Campbell will return as the top middle linebacker. He led the team in tackles with 140 total tackles in 2021. Linebacker Seth Benson was another returning player on the defense who was listed at the top of the depth chart.

Iowa went 10-4 in 2021 and they will look to have another 10-win season in 2022.
