Iowa State College GameDay ‘Beer Money’ sign reaches more than $36K in donations

The power of the computer age is on display this week after an Iowa State fan simply asked for some beer money.
A 24-year-old Cyclones fan, Carson King, made a sign asking for beer money and planned to bring it to the ESPN’s College GameDay site in Ames last Saturday. He wasn’t able to get close to the primary stage, but he did have a spot near the secondary stage where interviews take place.
Once the sign appeared on TV, King started receiving money on his Venmo account, which was displayed on the sign for people to send beer money to in order to replenish King’s alcohol supply.
Before he knew it, the amount of money donated to his Venmo was more than $1,600. As of Wednesday afternoon, it’s reached $36,000.
After getting the total to $600, King said he decided he couldn’t keep all of it and chose to donate to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. That’s the same hospital Iowa Hawkeyes fans wave to from the stadium at the end of the first quarter every game.
“It’s just a huge part of Iowa,” King said according to ESPN. “They help out kids from all over the country. They’re one of the best at what they do, and Iowa supports them. I figured this would be our way to help out.”
For his efforts, Anheuser-Busch and Venmo are each giving King an award. It’s unknown what Venmo will be providing, but Anheuser-Busch will be giving King free beer for an entire year. Both companies will also match King’s donation.
Each college football season is filled with terrific stories, but this one should be near the top at the end of the season. Sure, without the computer age, this wouldn’t be possible, but it wouldn’t happen without college football either.
