Iowa was on the wrong end of multiple controversial calls in the National Championship Game on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawkeyes fell to LSU 102-87 and were unable to keep up with the Tigers’ hot shooting from the field. But there were several questionable calls — including a technical foul on Caitlin Clark — that drew ire from fans and media watching the game.
The technical foul was Clark’s 4th personal of the game, and it came with time still left on the clock in the 3rd quarter. It was a major momentum swing that came shortly after Iowa had cut the deficit to single digits.
Here’s video of Clark’s technical, which was called after she appeared to harmlessly toss the ball behind her back after a play:

"No player in this game should get a technical foul for that." – @RebeccaLobo pic.twitter.com/qQuJD6bUTz

Fans and media were also taken aback by the lack of a technical foul for LSU head coach Kim Mulkey, who was often on the court and made contact with an official on at least one occasion.
Iowa’s foul trouble was not limited to Clark. McKenna Warnock was also in foul trouble for much of the game and only played 25 minutes before fouling out. Monika Czinano also fouled out after just 22 minutes of action.
Here’s some of the top reaction to the officiating crew in this game:
I am in complete disbelief at what I am witnessing in this game. How does that technical foul – among many others – even get consideration. Literally cannot believe this.

Breaking news: I'm watching from my couch and I also have 4 fouls.

An indefensibly stupid and unnecessary call. Smdh https://t.co/k7ZzxcQLYd

Might be the worst technical foul call I’ve ever seen and it comes in the biggest game of the season. That’s unacceptable.

If Clark deserved a technical for *that*, Mulkey has earned at least a misdemeanor for disturbing the peace.

can't remember a game where the refs so consistently, thoroughly & ceaselessly tried to destroy a Championship game
garbage from start to finish

I’m glad to see women’s college basketball officiating is just as horrific as men’s basketball officiating. Consistency is important.

Kim Mulkey is standing on the three-point LINE during a LIVE BALL.
Get her off the damn court.
— David Eickholt (@DavidEickholt) April 2, 2023
Kim Mulkey has walked all over the court and all over the officials and hasn't managed to get a technical fouls. This has been wild.
— Michael Voepel (@MAVoepel) April 2, 2023
Meanwhile I’m pretty sure Kim Mulkey could walk straight to center court with a flamethrower and they’d just politely tell her to move back.

pathetic by this ref crew to call this a technical… in a Championship game no less pic.twitter.com/gDDTOQJWly

These refs and these technical fouls 😂🤦🏽♂️

Kim Mulkey was so far on the court she literally made contact with a ref — no tech. Caitlin lightly flips the ball behind her to the baseline in the biggest game of the year — tech. Make it make sense.
