Two of Iowa’s best defenders will miss Saturday’s game against Northwestern.

Saturday morning, Gary Dolphin, the play-by-play voice of Hawkeye football, tweeted that linebacker Josey Jewell and safety Brandon Snyder would not participate in this weekend’s game. Those are significant losses for the Iowa defense.

Jewell leads the B1G with 70 tackles and was a unanimous midseason All-American selection by several media outlets. He’s also recorded 9.5 tackles for loss, four pass break-ups and an interception.

Snyder had been out for most of the first half of the season due to an ACL injury suffered in the spring. However, the safety did get on the field last week against Illinois, recording three tackles and returning an interception for a touchdown in his 2017 debut.

Due to the absences, Ben Niemann will serve as the middle linebacker on Saturday and Jake Gervase will be back as the starting safety for the Hawkeyes.
