Iowa became the latest team to experience the new world in college football where players decide in the middle of the season they are going to redshirt.

Wide receiver Kaleb Brown announced on social media that he would be redshirting the remainder of the season and wished the best of luck to the program and the team.

“I have decided to utilize my redshirt year and will not be playing in any additional games this season,” Brown said in the statement. “I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

On the season, Brown had 1 catch for 18 yards in the win against Troy on September 14. He was suspended for the season opener against Illinois State after an off-season arrest.

Brown started his collegiate career at Ohio State, and he came in as the highest-ranked receiver to ever sign during Kirk Ferentz’s time as the coach.

Last season, he had 22 catches for 215 yards and 1 touchdown. His best game was against Illinois, when he had 7 catches for 71 yards.

The new NCAA rules allow a player to play in four or fewer games and still be able to transfer. While he didn’t confirm that he was entering the transfer portal, monitoring Brown’s future plans will be an area of interest.

The Hawkeyes will look to bounce back from the tough loss to Ohio State as they host the Washington Huskies on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET.
