Five years ago, Braxton Miller became the talk of the college football universe. Everyone knew the former quarterback was a talented player, but little did we know exactly what the Ohio State star was capable of doing.
In 2015, Miller made the transition from quarterback to H-back. He had been one of the best players at quarterback in the nation, but an injury before the 2014 season cleared the path for J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones to take over under center. So, Miller decided to transition to another position for the opportunity to get on the field.
Miller’s first game at the position was no disappointment. In the 3rd quarter of the Buckeyes’ season opener against Virginia Tech, Miller took a direct snap, eluded several Hokies defenders and then hit a spin move to avoid a tackler, allowing him to race 53 yards to the end zone to give Ohio State a 28-17 advantage.
“It was probably one of the best moments of my life — honestly,” Miller said on FOX, per BuckeyesWire.com. “Without that, I don’t know if I went as high as I did in the draft as a receiver or athlete.
“I remember we were coming out of the huddle, and it was a sweep. It was an H-back sweep, but who knows what to expect, man,” Miller said. “I was supposed to go to the C gap, and I went way out there to the Z gap. I just turned it on, man. It was like a moment in my life that slowed down for me. Honestly, I did see those two guys coming and something just told me to spin.”
Miller ended the game with 61 yards and a touchdown on 5 carries and totaling 79 yards and a touchdown on three receptions. Ohio State defeated Virginia Tech in Blacksburg 42-24.
In his new role with the Buckeyes, Miller thrived. At the end of the season, he accounted for 341 receiving yards, 260 rushing yards and 4 total touchdowns as Ohio State finished the year 12-1.
