Penix said that Allen and the Hoosiers’ coaching staff have been careful about protecting his knee during practice. He said the whistle to blow plays dead when defenders get close has been quick.
Penix said Allen has had a quick whistle when defenders have come anywhere near him. Said there have been times when he's wanted a chance to use his legs, but Allen is looking out for him and not taking chances.

Penix was in the midst of a breakout season last year before suffering the knee injury. He threw for 1,645 yards and 14 touchdowns in six games. He also led the Hoosiers to a 6-2 record as IU got as high as No. 7 overall in the AP Poll.
Indiana’s only two losses last season came to Ohio State and then to Ole Miss in the Outback Bowl.
The Hoosiers open up their 2021 campaign against Iowa on Sept. 4.
