J.J. McCarthy didn’t get to play much in the College Football Playoff against Georgia last season, but he understands what it means to be in the semifinal once again. McCarthy was one of the many Michigan players that went to the podium at Tuesday’s presser.
Being in this situation before can play to Michigan’s advantage. McCarthy believes that the biggest difference between 2021 and now is that the Wolverines understand what to do.
“We’ve been here before, we know there’s a lot of things that could distract us from the task at hand in that this kind of week to prepare, we’re taking it much more as a business trip than kind of like a vacation feel like it was in Miami last year. I’d say the biggest diference is we’ve been here before and we know what to do.”

At the end of the day, McCarthy thinks that his teammates really love each other. This comes from their shared suffering after how last season ended.
“We love each other,” said McCarthy. “We want every single one of us to succeed, no matter who it is.”
Michigan and TCU kickoff from the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN.
