Jack Sawyer may have just saved Ohio State’s season.

With Michigan threatening to go up by 7 points midway through the 4th quarter, Sawyer stepped in to pick off a pass from Michigan’s Davis Warren. The interception kept the score knotted at 10-10 with just a few minutes to play.

That’s the first interception of Sawyer’s career, and it came at the perfect time:

Both teams have had issues with turnovers in this game. Each team has thrown 2 interceptions apiece, with 3 of the 4 coming in the red zone. Michigan also had a turnover on downs in the red zone earlier in the game.

Ohio State is hoping to avoid a disastrous loss. A defeat would likely knock the Buckeyes out of the Big Ten Championship Game because they also lost to Oregon earlier this season. With an Ohio State loss, Penn State would be in position to face Oregon in the Big Ten title game if it can beat Maryland on Saturday.

A loss to Michigan would also significantly-worsen Ohio State’s CFP case. Ohio State would need to earn an at-large bid in the College Football Playoff if it doesn’t win the Big Ten title.

The Buckeyes have not won in this series since Nov. 30, 2019.
