Jacksonville Jaguars to avoid paying Urban Meyer’s remaining contract, per report

Urban Meyer did not even make it through his first NFL season, getting fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars this week. Meyer was 2-11 but it was a number of other incidents unrelated to on-field performance that doomed Meyer.

Now, it looks like those off-field issues will allow the Jaguars to avoid paying Meyer the remaining amount of his 5-year contract. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Meyer was officially fired for cause to avoid paying Meyer the remaining 4 years on his contract.

According to Schefter’s report, no single incident is responsible but rather a “cumulation of instances.”

“A source within the organization said the Jaguars’ reasons for withholding the remaining guarantees are not tied to one specific incident — but rather a cumulation of instances that Jacksonville’s officials believe justified the firing.”

A legal battle is not out of the realm of possibility moving forward. Either way, this is another big mark about Meyer’s disastrous NFL stint.
