Penn State LB Abdul Carter is facing a misdemeanor marijuana charge, it has been revealed.
WJAC-TV in Johnstown, Pennsylvania reported on court records showing Tuesday’s charge stems from an Aug. 8 incident. University police were at Nittany Apartments for a fire alarm activation. They determined that the alarm had been activated by Carter smoking marijuana in his dorm room. Carter admitted to using marijuana and willingly surrendered a baggie to officers.
Penn State provided a statement to WJAC:
“We are aware of the charges against Abdul Carter. These alleged actions do not reflect the values and standards of our program and will be addressed. We will not comment any further as this is an ongoing legal matter.”
James Franklin was asked about the report during his Wednesday press conference.
“As you know, we don’t talk about those things publically,” Franklin told reporters. “Obviously, it’s being handled and dealt with internally. This is new to you guys. It’s not new to us.”
Carter is in his sophomore season. In 2022, he joined Deion Barnes as the only other Penn State freshman to record 10+ tackles for loss and 6+ sacks in a season. In Penn State’s Week 1 win over West Virginia, Carter had a solo tackle for loss.
The Nittany Lions host Delaware on Saturday. The game is set for noon ET, on Peacock.
