James Franklin spoke on Early Signing Day like most coaches around the country. There was one recruit that surprised Franklin when he ended up picking Penn State.
That player was Kaveion Keys. Keys is a 4-star LB from the 2023 class per the 247Sports Composite. Keys is the No. 4 player from Virginia and No. 21 LB in his class.
Franklin revealed that Keys wasn’t a player that Penn State thought it could get about a month ago.
“To be honest with you, we didn’t think we were gonna get him probably a month ago,” said Franklin.

Penn State battled with North Carolina for Keys’ signature throughout the year, so that could have been why Franklin didn’t think the Nittany Lions could land the LB. Keys visited with Penn State on Jun. 24 and North Carolina on Jun. 3.
At the end of the day, Franklin is glad that Keys is a Nittany Lion.
