James Franklin put it best when he described quarterback Sean Clifford’s performance as “gutsy.”

The Nittany Lions signal caller found sweet redemption after a pick-6 suffered earlier in the game. Clifford led Penn State on a game-winning drive that saw him complete 6-of-7 passes for 73 yards and the game-winning touchdown pass with under a minute left.

Penn State beat Purdue 35-31.

Franklin spoke with FOX Sports after the thrilling win over Purdue.

“Yeah, gutsy win. Showed a lot of character,” Franklin said. “I’m really proud of our guys. Sean (Clifford) kept cramping up, and we had to get Drew in there. But just proud of our guys. Our defense made plays when they needed to. We’ve got to make more plays, obviously, on offense, but overall, gutsy win, I’m super-proud of our guys.”

Franklin was then asked about the game-winning drive.

“It was very impressive. We work 2 minutes (offense) all the time, and it showed up for us right there. It was a little all or nothing on offense. We either went 3 and out or went down the field. We’ve got to be more consistent, but you can learn a lot in games like this.

“And I’d rather learn them with a win.”
