Jared Bernhardt has followed a remarkable path to an NFL roster. The former lacrosse star for Maryland will begin the 2022 season with the Atlanta Falcons, and he once turned down a chance to play football for the Terrapins.

Head coach Michael Locksley revealed his staff tried out Bernhardt and extended an offer, but he passed on the offer for a chance to play quarterback.

Locksley did go on to say he is not surprised by the success Bernhardt is having:

“We evaluated him, and we actually offered him an opportunity to play wide receiver,” explained Locksley. “He decided he wanted to play quarterback. For us, we already had a QB.

“I’m not surprised at all. We actually put him through a workout, (he) showed the skillset. I watched him at our pro day, a great example of what it’s like when you come to the University of Maryland. I’m not surprised because everything this kid touches turns to gold.”

Locksley said he joked with Bernhardt that the former Terp made his staff look bad after not playing for Maryland, but Locksley is excited to see what’s in store.
