Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s injury was a key hit for Ohio State in the Week 1 win over Ohio State. Though the Buckeyes regrouped and came away with a win, Smith-Njigba remains a key piece for the offense that the team will need moving forward.

On Monday, head coach Ryan Day briefly addressed the injury during an appearance for the Big Ten Network. Day continues to downplay the long-term impact, anticipating the injury to be a minor delay to the star receiver.

According to Day, there remains a hope that Smith-Njigba will return in Week 2 (Via Eleven Warriors):

“We’re evaluating him this week and hoping to have him back this Saturday,” Day said. “Having him as part of our offense is a big deal. He makes such an impact. Not too many guys you can say at the wide receiver makes everybody else on the field better, but Jaxon does. It was great to see some guys step up in his absence, but yeah, it’s not a long-term thing and we’ll evaluate him throughout the week.”

Day did not indicate what exactly is wrong with Smith-Njigba. However, it was also reported on Monday that the injury is believed to be a hamstring issue.
We’ll see if he is able to return quickly and get on the field in Week 2.
